System Change

As humanitarians we spend a lot of time debating what needs to change in our sector and why. But do we look enough at how that change happens?

ALNAP exists to support change and improve performance in humanitarian action. Recognising the lack of discussion around how change happens, the 31st ALNAP Annual Meeting 'Changing Humanitarian Action' looked at how change occurs in the humanitarian system, and how it can be done better.

Through the Global Forum, ALNAP brought together a broad range of humanitarians to identify recommendations to make the humanitarian system more effective and adaptable.

Responding to Changing Needs: Can the humanitarian sector adapt to the "new normal"?

John Mitchell

Changing Humanitarian Action?

In the humanitarian system, very little attention is paid to the processes by which change actually happens.

The focus of change initiatives is generally on what should change and why, rather than on how this change can be achieved. ALNAP's 31st Annual Meeting, in Stockholm on 14 - 17 February, looked at how change occurs in the humanitarian system, and how it can be done better.

Global Forum for Improving Humanitarian Action

Is the humanitarian system flexible enough to respond to an earthquake, a recurrent drought or during conflict?

The Global Forum for Improving Humanitarian Action aimed to identify recommendations that would help the international humanitarian system become more adaptable to different crisis contexts, making humanitarian action more effective.

A key part of the consultation process for the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit, the meeting was convened by ALNAP, in partnership with the United States Government, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the League of Arab States and the WHS Secretariat.
